The risk of developing severe illness from the new coronavirus, COVID-19, is low for most people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC recommends taking simple steps to avoid catching or spreading respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. These include covering your cough or sneeze, disinfecting commonly used surfaces, and thoroughly washing or sanitizing your hands. Call your doctor and stay home if you are sick. Spring break. Midterms. Global pandemic.
It’s been a stressful, confusing week for college students across the country.
College campuses — including University of Tennessee-Knoxville — have sent students home and moved classes online as the nation tries to subdue the spread of the coronavirus.
As many students scramble to find places to store their belongings until school resumes, U-Haul is offering a way to ease the burden.
College students can store their belongings in self-storage, for free, for 30 days at U-Haul-owned and -operated facilities, the company announced Thursday.
“We don’t know how every student is affected. But we know they are affected,” said U-Haul president John Taylor in a news release. “More and more universities are giving instructions to leave campus and go home. Students and their parents are in need of moving and storage solutions. We have the expertise and network to help, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

The offer is typically extended to communities affected by natural disasters, but this is the first time U-Haul is offering a free month company-wide.
What are the requirements?
You’ll need a valid college ID. You will also need to be at least 18 with a valid driver’s license if you need to rent a truck. The free month is a limited-time offer subject to availability.
